88 carat flawless oval diamond makes $13.7m

A 88.22-carat, flawless oval diamond was the top lot at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Sale. The D color, type Ila, oval brilliant gem made $13.7m against an estimate of $11.2 million to $12.7 million. The auction house called the stone “perfect” based on “every critical criterion” that diamonds are measured.

It has received the highest ranking for color, clarity, cut, polish and symmetry. The finished diamond was cut from a 242-carat rough stone, discovered at the Jwaneng mine in Botswana.
