Whitney Flame Topaz joins Smithsonian

The 48.86-carat vibrant red Whitney Flame Topaz was donated by Coralyn Wright Whitney along with a $5 million endowment. The topaz came from mines in Ouro Preto, Brazil. Topaz is typically a golden-orange color, but the Whitney Flame Topaz has a vivid red hue which makes it extremely rare and valuable. The red color is the result of trace quantities of chromium. The gemstone will be on display in the Harry Winston Gallery. The Smithsonian’s gem and mineral collection, with 10,000 gems and 375,000 mineral specimens, is one of the largest in the world.
